Happy Earth Day

Today was Earth Day, there's a website with lots of pictures of people holding up signs with ideas, some are pretty funny and creative. I'm not really a super green activist type person, but I do believe we can all do our part to look after where we live, so I think it's good to have an Earth day. I recycle whatever I can, something that's fairly easy in Yellowknife. I'm also going to start a compost heap this summer. I also want to Adopt a Street, there are some pretty messy areas where we walk that would be much nicer if they were cleaned up.

I've mentioned before that I think there are enough ideas and smart people out there to invent things that are better for the environment than lots of things we use now, I just don't know why there aren't more things like my little Solio.

On this day in 1961

Today is the anniversary of Yuri Gagarin becoming the first man in space (on board Vostok 1), he was also the first person to orbit Earth. Incidentally, I also just learned that the sixth cosmonaut to go into space was also the first woman, Valentina Tereshkova.

I put this event on my blog because it reminds me of a childhood memory I have of a guest my parents had. The man was one of the scientists that had helped to develop Yuri Gagarin's spacesuit, which I thought was really cool. He also made me a paper aeroplane that I seem to remember making circles around our living room and just staying in the air forever!

The penguins are sprouting

It's supposed to be spring I guess, we've had a few nice days, but it's not that great out. I think it's supposed to be +8 on Monday though, so we'll see what happens. Mom brought me a little beaded penguin family from SA when they were here at Christmas. She arranged them in our planters outside, where they promptly got snowed on and disappeared. Anyway, I think it's funny how they are reappearing, one is poking his head out as if checking on things and the other has a little snow cave that he's hanging out in. And they say there's only penguins in the Southern Hemisphere...
